The kitchen floor has been repaired, sanded, sealed, and refinished, and it is GORGEOUS.

Our neighbor/friend who did the floor also patched up the gap between the kitchen and dining room. It was an interesting problem, because a) the two floors are different woods, b) they are both very old wood that you can’t really match in age, and c) there was the question of what to do about the vent. So we decided not to try too hard to blend anything, but instead to make a clear and creative transition. Thus, the three strips of different woods running perpendicular to the rest of the floor:
If you are thinking, “But the red oak doesn’t match,” you are correct. We will have to refinish the dining room floor (and by extension, the living room) to get everything to match. Some boards around the vent had to be replaced anyway, so it was needed regardless. That’s down the road though.
